Honors British Literature

Honors British Literature

 

Course Material:  Material covered in this class will focus on literature of British Authors from the Anglo- Saxon period through the twentieth century.  We will be reading and analyzing literature both in class and independently.  In addition the various literary works, student will complete a major research paper utilizing MLA formatting and documentation.  Students will also be completing the Career Action Plan as part of the PHS Graduation Project.

 

Units of Study:  The following units of study will be covered over the course of the semester

Anglo-Saxon/Medieval Writers-  (2 weeks):

·     Beowulf

·     Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

·     The Canterbury Tales—Geoffrey Chaucer

 

Literary Concepts:  Epic Poetry, Epic Hero, Old English/Middle English, Alliterative Verse, Medieval Romance, Satire, Vocabulary Study

 

Elizabethan Writers- (6 weeks)

·     Hamlet- William Shakespeare

·     Othello- William Shakespeare

 

Literary Concepts:  Tragedy, Tragic Hero, Tragic Flaw, Aside, Soliloquy, Foil Character, and Vocabulary Study

 

Romantic Writers-- (5 weeks)

·     Frankenstein—Mary Shelley

·     “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”—Thomas Gray

·     “The Chimney Sweeper”—William Blake

·     “The Lamb”—William Blake

·     “The Tiger”—William Blake

·     “Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey” – William Wordsworth

·     “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”—Samuel Taylor Coleridge

·     “Kubla Khan”—Samuel Taylor Coleridge

·     “Ode to the West Wind”—Percy Shelley

·     “Ozymandias”—Percy Shelley

·     “Ode to the Nightingale”—John Keats

·     “Ode on a Grecian Urn”—John Keats

·     “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage”’ Lord Byron

 

Literary Concepts:  Romanticism, Frame Story, Gothic Novel, Symbolism, Elegy, Ode, Byronic Hero, Vocabulary Study

 

Modern Writers:  (5 weeks)

·     “Dubliners”-- James Joyce

·     “The Hollow Men”- T.S. Eliot

·     “Dulce Et Decorum Est”- Wilfred Owen

·     1984- George Orwell

 

Literary Concepts:  Modernism, Epiphany, Dystopian Literature, Vocabulary Study

 

 

Independent Novel Project (10 weeks)

Self-selected novel (one per marking period) to be read independently.  Novel project activities will accompany reading of novel.
