MS/HS students take STEM trip




Palmyra High School and Middle School students attended a STEM field trip on March 20th at the Lebanon Expo Center and Middle Creek Wildlife Refuge. Soils training was hosted by the Lebanon County Conservation District and coordinated by Watershed Specialist, Stephanie Harmon.  Special guest instructors included, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) - Resource Soil Scientist John Chibirka and NRCS-Grazing Specialist Dan Ludwig.  The basics of soils components, understanding maps, surveys, landforms, land use, decision making, protection and the importance of understanding soils was presented.  Students then rotated through two stations practicing the “Soil Texture by Feel” method to determine the classification of soil samples, viewed soil profiles  and discussed the differences including, landscape position and soil colors. During the second part of the day, students were hosted by PA Game Commission's Wildlife Biologist Lauren Fenstermacher at the Middle Creek Wildlife Refuge.
